5 major differences between playing Online and Offline Chess

Every individual has a different thought process and different preference, when it comes to playing chess. Some like to play on a real chess board and some prefer playing online. Well, it is easy to buy a chess board and keep at home, similarly, it is convenient to create an account and play chess online. Playing on an online platform is totally different from playing offline. Also, what matters the most, is your interest towards the game. If you are mindful and active then you will enjoy both, online and offline gaming. Playing chess is not an easy task. It is all about tactics and strategies.

Here are the 5 major differences between playing Online and Offline Chess

  1. Time Limit
  2. We all know that chess is a game of mind and tactics. Our minds need time to function in a better way, in order to plan a good move. While using the online platform for playing, there are time restrictions. One needs to be quick with the thought processes and moves. With tighter time limit, online gaming is more fun.

On the other hand, there is no time limit for offline gaming. One could take enough time to think and plan the next few moves. With sufficient time to use mind tactics and cognitive functioning, one could patiently wait for their turn while the opponent makes their move.

  3. The Opponent
  4. In any game, interaction is very important. Online gaming does not give you the liberty to interact with your opponent. In Online chess, you are either playing with a machine or a person who could be occupied with other tasks too. Hence, you are not able to know the opponent’s frame of mind. Also, while playing online chess, one could face a lot of distraction like answering phone calls, attending door bells etc.

When it comes to offline gaming, you are actually sitting face to face with your opponent. You are able to interact with your opponent and easily understand their minds. You are able to judge their thoughts by observing their body language, which is a major advantage in offline gaming. Also, it is easy to distract your opponent, while playing offline, which is not possible in online gaming sessions.

  5. Pressure
  6. Chess game involves a lot of complexities. While playing online chess, except for the time limit, you are more relaxed with the other elements. While playing chess online, you have the option of not revealing your identity. The opponent might not know who you are. Hence, you won’t feel the pressure of winning.

While in offline gaming sessions, both the players mostly know each other. Also, there are many people who can see you while playing. This builds a pressure. Some people start playing the game, but because of the pressure, they quit in between. Where you can judge your opponents’ thoughts, your opponent could also know your abilities as both sit face to face, in the offline gaming sessions.

  7. Stress
  8. Online gaming sessions include stress only with the time limit. You don’t have people around, due to which you can concentrate only on the game, hence the stress is less.

On the other hand, in offline gaming sessions, not only your opponent but there are other people too who are watching your game. On the real board, your opponent will be someone who has come well prepared with a proper strategy to win the game. Knowing all these factors, as the game gets heated, the stress increases of winning the game.

  9. Tactics & Strategies
  10. While playing chess, we learn various chess principles and tactics. And as you play, you learn how to implement them in the game. While playing online chess, every game is different. The online chess application, presents different situations in each game. Hence, when you start a new game, you learn how to implement the principles and tactics in different gaming situations. You also learn to prepare a new strategy in each game.

In offline gaming sessions, you play the game on the board, wherein the opponent could be the same person you played last with. People have their own style of playing and thus tend to use the same tactics and strategies in most of the games. This makes it very easy to judge the opponents’ next move. Hence the game becomes easy to play.

Whether online or offline, what matters is the passion that a player has towards the game. Though the external challenges might be different in both scenarios, but what still stays the same, are the right moves and the confidence to keep the game in your control. It does not matter if your opponent is a machine or a human, as the basics of the game stay the same. It is not the opponent, but you, that matters towards winning or losing a game.
